Abstract
The work on holdup in jet mixer with top entry nozzle is very few. Hence, experimental and theoretical studies of holdup characteristics in jet mixer were carried out. The effects of geometrical aspects of jet mixer and fluid properties on the holdup and mixing time characteristics were also studied. Five nozzles of different diameters (1 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm, 22 mm and 2 mm) were designed, fabricated and tested. Three nozzles positions from the bottom of the tank (22 cm, 27 cm and 30 cm) were selected and tested. Water was taken as Newtonian fluid and Carboxyl Methyl Cellulose and Gaur gum with different concentrations were taken as non-Newtonian fluids. The effect of liquid holdup on different mass flow rates, the effect of mixing time on different mass flow rates, power consumption and Reynolds Number. The resulting jet of fluid entrains some of the surrounding fluid and creates a circulatory pattern which leads to mixing in the tank. . Among the different nozzle diameters and nozzle positions studied, nozzle diameter = 15 mm and nozzle position = 27 cm were found to have more liquid holdup in jet mixer.
